A recent study on traumatic brain injuries (TBI) has revealed that symptoms don’t just go away. In fact, post brain injury symptoms can last for years. Typical post brain injury symptoms, often called Post-Concussion Syndrome, include:

  • Dizziness
  • Poor coordination
  • Problems with judgment
  • Memory loss
  • Headaches
  • Depression

The study conducted by the University of Oklahoma studied 500 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who had experienced head injuries and had screened positive for TBI. The veterans were also tested to determine the severity of their symptoms. The study categorized the data based on when the brain injury incurred: within four years of the screening or five to eight years prior to the screening.

The result is devastating: The symptoms did not improve over the eight years. The veterans who had a brain injury within four years reported approximately the same rate and severity in symptoms as those whose injuries occurred eight years prior.

Traumatic Brain Injuries Caused By Car Accidents

Brain injuries don’t just happen to veterans. Anyone can suffer a brain injury. And they often result after a car accident. A direct impact is not necessary to cause a brain injury. Brain injuries can occur after any sudden movement that moves the brain violently within the skull. For example, the sudden deceleration that occurs in many car and truck accidents can and does result in traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries are also difficult to treat because the symptoms are both physical and mental. Victims of TBI have a range of therapies and medications that help them function. It is also difficult to ascertain an amount of damages that will adequately compensate a victim for life-long issues that result from brain injuries.

If you or someone you love has suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident, contact an experienced car accident attorney to determine whether your rights to recover compensation for your injuries.
